What I Bring As A Person
First and foremost, I am a person. A person who is learning, growing, going through difficulties, and on a journey of practicing how to live a more joyful and wholehearted life. I believe that my humanness is my most valuable quality because I bring many years of inner work and my authentic self to my practice.
For those of you interested in personality evaluation tools, such as the Myers Briggs and Enneagram, I am an ENFP and 4w3. I grew up in California and lived in Edinburgh, Scotland for five and a half years. I learned a lot through living outside my native country and find it a valuable asset in my practice through which I work with a diverse population of clients. I am also a singer and a poet. For my doctoral thesis, I studied singing and songwriting and their influence on healing. My research developed my skill set for how to offer clients alternative ways to express what words cannot quite reach.
My experience as a client is one of the reasons I became a therapist. The counselling relationship is unique in how someone holds a safe space for you to explore yourself—your experience in the world, your needs, and your deepest longings. Experiencing therapy as a client showed me how powerful and healing therapy can be and the importance of finding the right therapist for you. My work is paying the gift of therapy forward.
What I Bring As A Therapist
I bring empathy and authenticity to our therapeutic relationship as well as extensive training and clinical experience. I ask a lot of questions and help you to name and get curious about what's happening for you. I meet you not as an expert, but as a collaborative guide who values and deeply respects who you are and the wisdom you already have about yourself.
As your therapist, I serve as a curious listener, a kindness encourager, and a space holder, wherein you may feel safe to explore your inner world, clarify what's causing you distress, and uncover internal sources
Partnering with people through their therapeutic process is incredibly rewarding and I am inspired by the ways in which people manage life's challenges and get through the seemingly impossible. It would be a privilege to accompany you on your journey to better health and wellbeing, however that looks for you.
10 Things I Believe About Therapy
1. Therapy looks different depending on the person and the therapist’s approach. There are many styles of therapy and finding the right one is important. More importantly, is your relationship w/ your therapist. Feeling respected & heard by your therapist is key.
2. Therapy is a place of discovery, of becoming a compassionate witness to yourself, your process, and your way of being. Therapists hold up a mirror to you so you can see yourself and how you feel about whatever you see.
3. Therapy is a space just for you, so it is kind of one-sided. You don’t need to worry about what your therapist feels or thinks, so you can focus on yourself and what you need, which can be both strange and liberating.
4. Results aren’t always quick in therapy. Change takes time, but having a space for you can be a huge relief. Everyone’s process looks different. Don’t get discouraged if things aren’t changing right away.
5. Therapists are humans just like you who have hard days and are doing the work of healing themselves. Therapists are *not* experts on life. We are all learning and practicing.
6. Further on from point 5, I don’t have all the answers. I can show you the path and walk with you, but I can’t tell you what to do or what choice to make. I encourage you to trust and respect the wisdom you already have within you.
7. Understanding & insight is important but learning how to lean in and be with your emotions, your messiness, your humanness is what truly heals.
8. If you don’t like something I said or if the direction of the therapy isn’t feeling right, you have every right to say so and please do! Letting your therapist know how the process is for you can make all the difference in the effectiveness of your therapy.
9. Consistency is so important in therapy. Change isn’t linear and you won’t always know what’s going on. Make it a ritual. In so doing, you work through resistance, and you show a commitment to yourself and your growth, which is powerful.
10. Therapy is not all sadness, trauma, and pain. It is also full of hope, resilience, bravery, connection, intimacy, love, triumph, and joy. Therapy is a privilege and an honour to be a part of and I am amazed by my clients every day.
